About Aggregates

Aggregates are crushed rock, gravel and recycled hardcore graded by size, forming the load-bearing base for driveways, foundations, drainage and concrete. The most common grade is MOT Type 1 (0–40mm) sub-base, which compacts to a dense, engineered layer. Single-size clean gravels like 10mm and 20mm are used where the layer needs to drain freely or where a decorative finish is wanted. Aggregate is sold loose by the tonne or in bulk bags of roughly 0.7–0.8 tonnes.

Common uses

  • Sub-base for driveways, patios and paving
  • Pipe bedding and land drainage
  • Oversite fill, haunching and levelling
  • Concrete and mortar production
  • Footpaths, tracks and hardstanding

Choosing & ordering

Choose MOT Type 1 for a compactable base beneath slabs, tarmac or block paving. Where the layer has to drain, use a single-size clean stone with no fines. As a rule of thumb one tonne of Type 1 covers about 10m² at 50mm compacted, so add 5–10% for compaction and losses.

Frequently asked about Aggregates

How much MOT Type 1 do I need?

As a guide, one tonne covers roughly 10m² at 50mm compacted depth. For a 100mm driveway sub-base allow about 0.2 tonnes per m², plus 5–10% for compaction.

What is the difference between MOT Type 1 and Type 3?

Type 1 is a well-graded 0–40mm crushed stone that compacts to a dense, load-bearing base. Type 3 is a reduced-fines, more open version that drains freely, used where permeability or SUDS compliance is required.

Can I get recycled aggregate?

Yes. Recycled 6F2/6F5 and crushed concrete are cheaper, lower-carbon alternatives to primary quarried stone for fill and sub-base where a material certificate is not required.

Is it delivered loose or in bags?

Both. Loose tipped by the tonne is cheapest for larger jobs, and bulk bags of about 0.7–0.8 tonnes suit tight access and part loads.
