About Ballast & Hardcore

All-in ballast is a pre-blended mix of sharp sand and 20mm gravel for making concrete. Hardcore is broken brick, stone and crushed concrete used as bulk fill and a base beneath slabs and oversite. Both are sold loose by the tonne or in bulk bags.

Common uses

  • Concrete (all-in ballast plus cement)
  • Oversite and trench fill (hardcore)
  • Base beneath floor slabs
  • Building up and levelling ground
  • Filling voids and redundant trenches

Choosing & ordering

For concrete, mix ballast with cement. A common foundation mix is 5:1 (ballast to cement), with 6:1 for general use and 4:1 for stronger structural work. One tonne of ballast makes roughly 0.5m³ of concrete. Use hardcore for bulk fill where a graded, certified sub-base is not needed.

How much concrete does a tonne of ballast make?

About 0.5m³ of concrete once mixed with cement and water.

Is hardcore the same as MOT Type 1?
